Migrate Google Sites to SharePoint
SharePoint is one of the most popular tools for building the modern intranet, but many companies using Google Workspace have instead built out their intranet using Google Sites. At BitTitan we’re seeing an increase in the volume of cross-platform migrations, often stemming from mergers and acquisitions (M&A). MigrationWiz is now capable of migrating Google Sites to SharePoint using a single shared document license.
If you’re moving Google Sites to SharePoint, there are a few things you need to know:
Before moving from Google Sites to SharePoint
Near the end of 2021, Google automatically transitioned to ‘new’ Google Sites from their ‘classic’ version. Before you use MigrationWiz to move your site to SharePoint, you’ll first need to confirm that you’re using the ‘new’ version. In addition, the Google Site needs to be configured with the ‘public’ setting.
The nature of cross-platform migrations means there are usually elements on one side or the other that aren’t one-to-one compatible. You’ll want to prepare for these ahead of time when planning a Google Sites to SharePoint migration:
- The font type, font size, and collapsible content from Google Sites will not be migrated intact.
- SharePoint doesn’t support embedded HTML webpages, so layout and content elements may be distorted.
- Google Sites supports more menu layers and more columns than SharePoint. These items will be migrated, but some will end up in different locations at the destination.
- Links will appear differently once they’ve been migrated to SharePoint.
We’ve been adding fresh educational content to the BitTitan website so you can learn how to manage successful cross-platform migrations. In addition to step-by-step instructions on our help desk, check out this Master Class on Google Shared Drive to SharePoint migrations.
